Critical Ops (Free) is one of those games you never really hear too much about that has a absolutely massive tight knit community of players. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s basically Counter-Strike on mobile, and it has a surprisingly vibrant competitive scene. The game is going to be featured at Amazon’s Mobile Masters, an esports event taking place in Seattle on the weekend of June 23rd and 24th where players will battle for a share of a $100,000 prize pool.
What’s been sort of interesting about the world of mobile esports is that while a lot of developers have taken a crack at having some sort of esports angle for their game, many of them lack the basic foundation of what’s typically required when it comes to the rest of the pieces of having an esport. In this specific case, we’re talking spectator clients which have been oddly rare for a lot of mobile games trying the esports thing. For a long time, this was one of the big features of Guns of Boom (Free), and at Mobile Masters later this month the developers of Critical Ops will be revealing their own spectator client. I’m always interested to see how these sort of things shake out, as these kind of games are huge, but still a niche compared to the size of the rest of the mobile market.
Additionally, I’d really love to provide some better coverage to games like Critical Ops, so if you’re a person who closely follows the game and would like to do weekly roundups of what’s happening inside Critical Ops and the larger Critical Ops community (sort of like these Arena of Valor roundups) hit me up on Twitter @hodapp.
