Wayward Souls is an action RPG with a story to tell - or rather one different story for each of its seven playable characters. Driven towards the dungeon delving life out of different motivations, you start your adventure in a dark, dank cellar and make your way upwards, hacking and slashing and collecting coins. And if you die? Well, someone out there will remember you.
Wayward Souls was actually released as a mobile game a couple of years ago and we previously covered it here. This port not only brings it to the PC, but only expands on it, adding bugfixes, a rework of several mechanics, and other things. Of course, the core gameplay stays the same: you battle your way through randomly generated dungeon layouts with 16-bit graphics, fight bosses every couple of floors, and collect a ton of fancy hats. Yes, hats.
One of the game's neat features is the ability to leave a gravestone with a message for the next player. Even better, you can then bless or curse your grave, which is supposed to help or hinder whoever finds your remains. (Right now, this works for Steam friends, but it would be nice to encounter the graves of random people as well.)
Each character has their own set of moves and previously collected coins can be spent on upgrading them, which means that every run brings you one step closer to your goal. Getting there is not an easy feat, mind, so you'll need all the coins you can get and a lot of practice to boot.
The PC version just started its stint in Early Access, and there are a few things that could certainly be improved upon, such as the movement mechanics (you can move diagonally, but you can only attack straight, which feels odd) or the way the game handles health regeneration (health potions are exceedingly rare). Still, this is basically a complete game already, and it's well worth your time.
